In a petri dish world | 3 poems | James Dennis Casey IV

Waiting for Her

James Dennis Casey IV

Trying to find peace
Inside an abandoned fortress
Stuck in permanent
Witching hour
With nothing but ghosts
For company
And a sign on the gate stating
“No Visitors After Midnight”

Waiting for her
The lotus eater
To bring the black
Absinthe
And owl spell book
Full of hoaxes
That everyone falls for
With blood in their eyes
In a futile attempt
To free our tired bones

Time is a bandit here
Abandoning stolen predictions
That have yet to come true
Leaving blank on blank
To the imagination
In the prophecy pool
And the odds are against us

Petri Dish World

James Dennis Casey IV

Living under a microscope
In a petri dish world
Full of human music blues and
Dirty Harry amoebas
That vengefully destroy
All rational thought

Spinning tales of the stoned
From can to can’t
And basket case lies
About reflections
Of a floating world

We’re all the stars
Of our own movies
Eating frustration sandwiches
Made of the great
American death rattle
That kill all the extras
With untold truths

Stuck here
Somewhere over the rainbow
In a mad scientist’s laboratory
The three futures
That could have been
Have come and gone
Down the guilt party water slide
And Google is our new God

Not Sorry Eyes

James Dennis Casey IV

I once pulled down
The heavens
To kiss the cheek
Of the moon
We fell in love
And ran away
On the long road
To ruin

After years of tears
And night ride
Love tests
The sky
Was so dark
Without her in it
She eventually decided
To go home

Sometimes I cry
Under the stars
As she looks down
With sorry
Not sorry eyes
And I know
It was never
Meant to be
