Veiled Lady by Raffaelo Monti

marble c. 1860
Minneapolis Institute of Arts
I stood so long in front of her
staring
that the security guard hovered.
As my fingers
stretched toward the translucent
marble,
he made a sound in his throat.
I did not
desire her touch, just to reach light
captured
in stone as though it were real
and abiding.

Thank you very much, Ina. Jamie Dedes posted the Veiled Virgin on FaceBook, and it reminded me of the Veiled Lady that I have spent hours looking at in Minneapolis. It inspired this poem.
